Learning to Let Go!

Letting go of certain tasks and responsibilities in life is SO HARD TO DO sometimes.

As a Mom, and as a Business Owner I have my certain methods and ways of doing things and I kind of cringe at the thought of having to pay someone to do something that I know how to do myself. Right?

HOWEVER, sometimes the overwhelm that comes with doing EVERYTHING yourself is just too much for me to handle, especially with my ADHD. So today, I made a small step towards progress.

I have an order that I'm in the middle of processing, and for those of you that don't know me personally, I am a two-person show over here. I did make a huge move towards easing my life a little last year when I got sick, and hired an awesome office manager (Hi, Jenn!) who keeps me organized and my clients happy because she responds to them SO dang quickly! That decision was pushed onto me a little faster than I was "ready" for because I had Lyme disease, but now that I'm through the discomfort part of letting go, I could not be happier with it!

Anyways, back to today - I am working on an order and this sweet, beautiful baby girl had come in with a pretty bad rash and some baby acne. Not her fault obviously because it happens all of the time! But with professional images I like to edit out things that are "temporary" such as blemishes, cuts, bruises, etc. So this rash is something I refuse to just leave on the pictures because a few weeks later it was completely gone. So I sat here editing each image by hand.....hours passed by....and I'd look up and was only half way done. I went upstairs to get coffee (of course) and saw that it was like SEVENTY degrees and sunny out!!! I told myself that was enough of working in the basement and I came downstairs and sent the rest of the images off to a professional retouch company. I knew it would mean less profit for me on the sale, but it gave me my afternoon back!

Get this - I then went for a walk with the dogs, laid out in the sun listening to a new album a friend suggested to me, and then went on a little coffee date (with a view!) with Jeff!

I just came back to do some more work now, and THE IMAGES ARE ALREADY DONE AND IN MY INBOX!!! Is that not insane?! I spent a measly thirty dollars.... and you know what the kicker is? They look a million times better than when I was trying to do them myself! Why should that surprise me though? I think sometimes the whole "being in control of everything" aspect of running a business clouds my view of reality - because I'm a professional PHOTOGRAPHER, not a professional RETOUCHER. So yes, they look amazing as they should and it's making me realize maybe this should be my norm. WORTH EVERY PENNY, ladies.

I felt compelled to share it with you because though this may be a business example, there are countless things in life that we can all outsource - and really, how much is your time worth to you?

Now, I know, I know....outsourcing = money and that scares the bejeezus out of a lot of us. Money is hard to part with especially for things we feel like we are "supposed" to do ourselves (because our mothers did, and their mothers did, and EVERYONE does, right?!?).

But let me be the first to tell you, girl - it is SO AMAZING! Like, let your hair down throw your hands up going downhill on a rollercoaster FREEDOMMMMMMMMMMM! (Cue the George Michael song and rock out.)

The more successful women I talk to, the more I realize that outsourcing is a huge way that they save their sanity and get through their weeks. I think a lot of people feel like it's too hush hush to talk openly about, or we're ashamed of it...but trust me when I tell you it's out there and being done ALL THE TIME.

To further convince you of this magnificent magic, here is a small list of things we have to do on a daily/weekly/monthly basis that can be outsourced:

  • House Cleaning
  • Laundry
  • Grocery Shopping
  • Home Repair
  • Furniture assembly
  • Gardening and Landscaping
  • Personal Grooming (think your nails, hair, waxing, etc.)
  • Your Taxes
  • Paying Your Bills
  • Web Design
  • Pet Walking and Grooming
  • Dinner/Food Prep
  • Party Planning

Just think about all of the TIME you can get back by not worrying about these things! After all, we only get one go-around on this earth and time is our one truly non-renewable resource. It's really all we have and we get to choose how we spend it. So go out there, do something uncomfortable, let go of those reigns a little bit, and OUTSOURCE something! I know you can!

If you already outsource parts of your life I would LOVE to hear about it in the comments!
